About the UCAC

The Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions (UCAC) is an all-volunteer non-profit based in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. With a mission of documenting and increasing the understanding of African American contributions in the County, they have undertaken many projects such as the oral histories on this page as well as museum exhibits, documentaries, and books. Additionally, the UCAC collaborates with many organizations in St. Mary’s County including St. Mary’s County Public Schools, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and St. Mary’s County Historical Society.

The Oral Histories

With over 100 unique interviews and stories dating as far back as the early 1900s, the UCAC Oral History Collection paints a vivid picture of the African American experience in St. Mary’s County. With histories such as the integration of schools or the building of the UCAC monument, there is no shortage of rich perspectives from these elders.
